A young man of small build is lowered down a hole up to 100 metres. He must then crawl on his hands and knees across, up to another 100 metres. They chip away with a hammer and chisel and collect ore for up to twelve hours. The hole is so small that they have to back out the way they come in. They have only candle light because electric light burns too much oxygen. The tunnels do collapse from time to time and miners do die.
